Listeners to Mahmoud Ahmed enter an edgy, mysterious world of hypnotic grooves, snake-charmer brass riffs punctuated by complex guitar lines and above it all the singer’s compelling, pleading vocals. Mahmoud, still performing today (acknowledged by Andy Kershaw, Charlie Gillett and Lucy Duran as one of the key stars of WOMAD Reading 2005), is one of the great stars of the golden age of Ethiopian music and the 1975 LP Ere Mela Mela (reproduced here with some extra tracks) is one of its treasures.
