Following its widely acclaimed debut, Illuminated, The-Quartet returns with an exhilarating second album ‘Shattering’ - written by core members Jack Hues and Sam Bailey, the album is an exploration of their musical similarities and disparities on the overlapping edges of jazz and rock, immaculately produced by Chris Hughes
At the album’s centre is their ‘Canterbury Tales’ suite : a lyrical homage to the jazz rock synthesis of the Canterbury (their home town) sound of the 60s and 70s and the psychedelia of homegrown bands like the Soft Machine, Caravan and Egg.
The album is full of dynamic soloing and interplay - more pared down and muscular than its predecessor, but echoing some of the same themes with the Mingus-influenced ‘Dark Moon’ and the exquisite Miles Davis references of ‘Lights Out’.
The-Quartet has established a fine reputation for dynamic, high octane performances and the album features its latest live line-up: Jack Hues, guitar and Sam Bailey, piano joined by Tom Mason, double bass, Dave Smith drums, Paul Booth, tenor saxophone and Duncan MacKay, trumpet. They will be on a short UK tour in May & June 2008.
